Dr Nikhil Patel
Clinical PhD Fellow
Nikhil is a Clinical Research Fellow in Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery at The Royal Marsden and Speciality Registrar in General Surgery in London. His PhD, carried out at The Singanayagam Lab, focuses on the microbiome and mucin profile of the oral cavity as potential markers of early diagnosis of oesophagogastric cancer. His work involves studying the interplay between microbiome, mucins and the immune system as drivers of mutagenesis in this disease.

Nikhil studied Medicine at Imperial College London, graduating in 2016 and was awarded 1st class honours for his intercalated BSc in Management. He completed Foundation and Core Surgical Training in the Oxford Deanery, before returning to London for Higher Speciality Training in General Surgery, with a sub-speciality interest in Upper GI surgery.
